Community Gathering Space in the Heart of Downtown Kenmore

The Town Square and Hangar are now open! Located at 6728 NE 181st St, the mission of the Town Square and Hangar is to mold signature downtown public spaces where Kenmore area residents, visitors, and business people can gather, interact, meet some of their daily needs, and have an authentic local sense of place. By achieving this mission, the Town Square and Hangar will build a sense of community and can serve to catalyze economic vitality and investment in Kenmore's downtown.

What is the Town Square and Hangar?

The Town Square and the Hangar community building are intended for the use and enjoyment of Kenmore residents and visitors. This facility belongs to the taxpayers of Kenmore and is intended to provide a location free of charge for them gather, entertain, meet, eat, drink, connect, and just hang out.

Intended uses for the Hangar include the following:

  • Meeting up with friends or just hanging out
  • Book club meetings
  • Recitals
  • Lectures
  • Musical performances
  • Club meetings
  • Meeting with clients
  • After-school programs
  • Classes

The Hangar is a gathering place for the public to use free of charge.  The Hangar contains a two-sided fireplace, comfortable furniture and table space, free wi-fi, plugins, and a large airplane hangar-style door that can remain open on warm summer days. There are two spaces in the Hangar that people can reserve at no cost.  When these spaces are not reserved, they will be available for anyone to use informally for hanging out or meeting friends or a client.  These two spaces are:

  • The “Beaver” room (the small conference-like room on the east side of the “Otter” gathering area).
  • The “Otter” gathering area (adjacent to the large Hangar door and between the fireplace and the north wall of the building).

Diva Espresso

Co-located within the Hangar is retail tenant Diva Espresso, a northwest original coffee franchise. Diva Espresso sells various beverage and food options, including coffee drinks, teas, smoothies, baked goods, sandwiches, ice cream, and beer and wine for on-premises consumption.

Monday - Saturday from 6:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Sunday from 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

 

RESERVABLE SPACES

The Hangar at Town Square is home to two spaces: the Otter Room and the Beaver Room.
 

The Otter Room (825 square-foot common area)

Designed to accommodate community gatherings and shared use, The Otter room features a double-sided fireplace and eclectic array of comfortable furniture creating a warm and intimate space to read, converse, work on homework or simply hang out.

When The Otter room is reserved, individuals or groups will have access to the space between the north wall of lockers and the north side of the fireplace. The Otter room will remain open to the public during your reservation or event. This space may not be roped off or blocked from public access. Examples of events that can take place in this space are book clubs, PTA meetings, after-school activities, recitals, classes, and more.

The Otter Room Features:

  • Space for up to 130 people standing, 48 people seated (eight rectangular tables), and 60 people lecture style
  • A robust A/V system (projector and screen)
  • Free WiFi
  • Outlets for phones and computers

 

The Beaver Room (287 square-foot multi-purpose room)

Designed for intimate gatherings and small groups, The Beaver room features three movable tables and eight chic and comfortable chairs perfect for business meetings and casual gatherings alike. The Beaver room is located next to the Otter room and has glass sliding doors which can be closed for private meetings or events.

The Beaver Room Features:

  • Space for up to 12 people seated
  • An LCD monitor with computer hook-ups
  • Free WiFi
  • Outlets for phones and computers

 

RESERVATION FAQs

 

When can I begin reserving spaces in the Hangar?

Both the Otter Room and the Beaver Room will be available for reservations starting in late October 2017.

How can I reserve a space in the Hangar?

An online reservation system will be available in late October 2017 that will allow you to reserve either the Otter Room or the Beaver Room. Reservations for meetings or events with less than 30 people must be made 72 hours in advance. Reservations for events with an expected attendance of more than 30 people must be made 35 days in advance.

Can I reserve a space in the Hangar before October?

We are not accepting reservations at this time. All reservations must be made through our online reservations system, which will be made available to the public in late October.

How can I reserve the outdoor space in the Town Square?

Reservations for the Town Square outdoor space require an Event Permit through the City of Kenmore Permitting Office. More information can be found here. Furniture, games, and A/V equipment inside the Hangar building may not be used for events taking place in the Town Square.

What hours of the day will I be able to reserve a space in the Hangar?

Reservations can take place for either room Monday through Saturday (6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.) and Sunday (7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.). The City may allocate hours for open public use (no reservations). No reservations will be allowed on federally-recognized holidays.

What if I want to hold an event after hours?

After-hours reservations will not be accepted at this time.

How long can I reserve a space?

Room reservations will be in one-hour increments up to a maximum of three hours.

Can I reserve the whole building?

You may reserve both the Otter Room and the Beaver Room at the same time (for up to three hours), however, you may not reserve the whole building. When using the Otter Room for an event, you must allow the public access to attend the event and to freely enter and exit through all of the exterior doors of the building.

Where can I learn more about reservations (A/V, set-up, decorations, furniture, rules, etc.)?

Can I charge attendees to participate in a class or event that I’m holding in the Hangar?

We ask that all events and meetings held in the Hangar are free-of-charge. This facility belongs to the taxpayers of Kenmore and is intended to provide a location free-of-charge for them gather, entertain, meet, eat, drink, connect, and just hang out.

Can I play my guitar, cello, etc. in the building?

We’d love for you to play music for those to enjoy in the space. We simply ask that you a) make a reservation for the Otter Room (general space) once they become available online and b) play music at a reasonable volume so all guests can enjoy the space.

Can I serve food or alcohol at my event?

You may serve food at your event. Diva Espresso will offer catering for food and coffee in the space. For questions about catering, please contact Shelby Krogh at skrogh@kenmorewa.gov. You may not supply your own alcohol at events. Alcohol may only be purchased from Diva Espresso and must remain within their space.
