*In advance of construction, PSE is relocating a gas main at two locations in NE 153rd Place right-of-way between Juanita Drive NE and 70th Ave NE that conflict with the proposed sidewalk improvements. PSE's work will continue through March 5th, 2019. During the PSE's work, the shoulder on the south side of the road is closed to pedestrians. Pedestrians are directed to cross the NE 153rd Place at 70th Ave NE and use the sidewalk on the other side of the street. For the people in between 70th Ave NE and the work zone, the contractor has a flagger watching out for pedestrians and will escort them through the work zone as needed.

As part of the City’s 2015-16 Neighborhood Transportation Plan program, the City held two public meetings with citizens in the Arrowhead Elementary School neighborhoods.  In these meetings, citizens were asked to provide public comment on traffic, pedestrian and cyclist safety concerns and improvements.  One of the top safety concerns identified was the narrow shoulder with undefined driveways along the south side of NE 153rd Place which serves as the primary route for walking students attending Arrowhead Elementary school, east of Juanita Drive NE.  Based on this feedback, the City submitted a grant proposal in 2016 to develop sidewalk along NE 153rd Place through the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT)’s Safe Route to Schools program.  WSDOT awarded a grant to fund this sidewalk project in June 2017.

Project Description:
