Kenmore City Council is continuing the discussion regarding policing and use of force policies at this Monday's upcoming City Council Meeting.
In June, Kenmore Mayor David Baker signed the Obama Foundation’s Mayors Pledge; a call for mayors, city councils, and police oversight bodies to address police use of force policies. The pledge aims to take steps towards reforms that will address police uses of force, and systemic racism in the criminal justice system.
The pledge commits that the mayor and other city council officials will commit to the following actions in the local Kenmore community:
- Review the police use of force policies.
- Engage communities by including a diverse range of input, experiences and stories for review.
- Report the findings of the review to the community and seek feedback.
- Reform the community’s police use of force policies
Two listening sessions with the community have already been hosted by the City Council. Opportunity will be given for the community to provide additional input on use of force policies and practices. King County Sheriff Mitzi Johanknecht will be joining Kenmore Police Chief Brandon Moen for the meeting, providing further information related to the department’s use of force policies, historic use of force statistics for Kenmore, officer training information, and further details.
