When Kenmore Automated Photo Enforcement (KAPE) was launched in 2023, the program initially included speed enforcement cameras in the school zones of Arrowhead Elementary and Kenmore Elementary, and one red light safety camera at the 61st Avenue & Bothell Way intersection. Because the program has been successful at changing driving behavior and reducing the risk of crashes and injuries, the program has expanded to the Inglemoor High school zone, and four transportable cameras will be added in January.
Safety cameras in the Inglemoor High school zone enforce the 20 MPH school zone speed limit when school zone flashers are on, and the 30 MPH regulatory speed limit at all other times. As with all photo enforcement cameras in Kenmore, a 60-day warning period was put in place before the start of ticketed enforcement, and that period is now ending. Starting November 8, speeding drivers will receive an infraction notice in the mail. Prior to camera installation, a study found that over 60% of drivers were going six miles or more over the speed limit. Once the cameras were installed and powered on, the violation rate dropped to 3%.
Coming in January, four new speed safety cameras will be added to the KAPE program. Unlike the current fixed cameras, the new cameras are transportable, providing flexibility to place the cameras where they will have the greatest impact for the safety of drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. Originally planned for November, deployment of the cameras has been delayed. Once launched, there will be 60-day warning period prior to ticketed enforcement.
All revenue generated by the KAPE program is reinvested in traffic, pedestrian, and cyclist safety. Learn more and find updates at kenmorewa.gov/KAPE. For questions, email KAPE@kenmorewa.gov.
