Construction Noise

In accordance with Kenmore Municipal Code (KMC) 8.05.025.F, construction-related noise—including excavation, repair, demolition, or alteration work—is only permitted during the following hours:

Approved Construction Hours:

  • Monday–Friday: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
  • Saturday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • No construction is allowed on Sundays or City holidays

Violations of this code may result in a visit from the Kenmore Police Department. Fines may be issued as follows: up to $250 for a first violation, and up to $1,000 for any additional violations within a 12-month period.

Noise Variance Requests (e.g., request to work on a holiday)

Noise variance requests for construction activities are considered under KMC 8.05.035. Variances are considered only under limited circumstances where the work is necessary and does not significantly impact the public (i.e., neighbors). Requests must be submitted at least 48 hours (2 business days) in advance of the holiday or proposed work date. Sites with a history of non-compliance or frequent verified complaints are unlikely to be granted waivers. Thank you for your cooperation.

To request a variance, email SLoyuk@kenmorewa.gov and include the information listed below.

  1. Permit number(s) and site address
  2. Summary of proposed work and anticipated noise impacts
  3. A brief explanation on why this work cannot occur during regular construction hours
  4. Proposed workdays and hours (the minimum necessary)
  5. 24-hour site contact name and phone number
  6. Has this project received noise complaints in the past?
  7. Has this project been in violation of the noise ordinance?
  8. Does the work occur on private property, public right-of-way, or both?
