NE 169th Culvert Project
Image: Illustration of existing culvert vs. proposed type of culvert to be installed during this project
Location
The work will occur on NE 169th Street, about 1/8 mile east of Simonds Road, as shown below.
Schedule
Project Description
- What the City is Doing, and Why – A contractor will replace an existing, undersized stream culvert with a much larger culvert. The existing culvert is both too small to pass flows from large storms, which leads to neighborhood flooding, and too steep for fish to swim to habitat areas upstream of the culvert. The City is required to remove fish passage barriers identified by the WA Department of Wildlife, such as this culvert, prior to the end of the culvert’s useful life.
- What to Expect – During construction—currently planned for Summer 2027-- people residing or traveling near the work site may experience the following impacts:
- Traffic – The project will require diversion of traffic around the work zone on NE 169th Street. The approach to managing this traffic diversion is being developed as part of project design and will be shared through routine project updates posted on this webpage.
- Noise – typical construction noise and vibration such as that generated by heavy equipment (e.g. excavators, dump trucks) will be emitted at the work site. Most noise will be generated during normal working hours—Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM—though less impactful noise such as that generated by dewatering pumps may continue outside of these hours.
- Utility Service Interruption – nearby residences may experience brief, temporary interruptions to normal utility services such as water, gas, and power while work is ongoing. Interruptions typically last less than a couple hours. Utility companies will communicate with affected customers directly in advance of any necessary impacts.
