Preparedness is one of the four pillars of emergency management. Preparedness includes both personal preparedness at home, in public. in your car, or at your children's school, and business preparedness at your place of employment.

Being prepared for any emergency takes only a few simple steps. Whether you haven't yet started to prepare, or simply need additional information for being better prepared, take steps today for knowing what to do to make it through an emergency. Learn what to do and how to plan for your own safety and needs along with your family's and pets. If someone in your family relies on special equipment or medications make sure your planning includes how those special needs will be dealt with.

Get started today, our next emergency or disaster could happen at an unforeseen moment. Are you ready? Consider these simple steps:

  1. Make a plan. Know how you and your loved ones will communicate when communication systems are down, and where you will meet if separated.

  2. Build a kit. Include food, water, medications, toiletries, a first aid kit, flashlight and extra batteries, warm blankets and clothing, and other essential supplies for every member of your household (including pets). Keep a kit at home and in your car. Use this pamphlet to help guide you in preparing a kit.

  3. Stay informed. Monitor local radio stations for important safety information and updates. Be sure to have a battery-operated radio and extra batteries on hand. Consider registering for emergency notifications at Alert Northshore - it's free to subscribe!
